Steering wheel safety device
Background
There are many accidents worldwide involving a lorry pulling away from a loading bay before a forklift truck has finished unloading its contents.
The Brief
To design and prototype a device which releases a safety key once it is locked onto a lorry steering wheel.
The Solution
An electro-mechanical device that uses a pressure sensitive material to sense when it is fitted to the wheel. Once pressure is registered in each of the three arms, a key release mechanism allows a key to be removed which is then used to unlock the loading bay door. When loading is finished the key is reintroduced, allowing the device to be unlocked and removed.
